Ben James

I'm Ben, an obnoxiously colourful 22 year old student studying Comics & Graphic Novels at Teesside University. My areas of interest are representation of marginalised groups, activism, and exploring dark and complex themes. I specifically like to focus on representation of mental illness, disability and LGBT+ identities, as these are categories I have experience with myself. I take every chance I get to learn about new things; like languages, cultures, and perspectives on the world!

I have already done some impressive self-published work, including multiple fanzines both for charity and for profit, as well as my own zine titled "Intersections - an LGBT anthology". The fanzines I’ve been a part of includes zines focused on LGBT history around the world, several Kingdom Hearts focused zines focusing on LGBT relationships or black characters, and I’ve helped to organize a Trans Final Fantasy 7 zine, which should be on sale soon!

I've also had my writing published within a book named "Spectrums: Autistic Transgender People in Their Own Words". As for my activism, I've taken part in interviews on how to improve the experiences of other trans autistic people, I attend protests and pride when possible, and I’ve created short form comics touching on topics of fatphobia, gender transition, and ableism. I’m very vocal about removing stigma and negative connotations around many things, which is visible throughout my online presence.

I also spend a lot of my time examining media I enjoy through queer theory, looking at the potential gay subtext in the games and comics I love (especially when it comes to Kingdom Hearts)! When I’m not doing that, you’ll probably find me retweeting cats on twitter. Lots and lots of cats.
